Your skills as a surgeon goes without saying but as human being, I have found you to be Mary Poppins like “Practically Perfect” One day in February you took the time to find out what was going on emotionally with me. Many physicians would have skated right past that.

When I was diagnosed with cancer five months ago, I tried to face each step as positively as I could. I knew I needed to trust the people being brought into my life. You may not remember, but one day you “reminded” me to trust you, you would not make me do anything I did not want to do, so I did. Here I am in Texas for a week standing at the water & relaxing. It is providing a great opportunity to do a lot of reading on breast cancer & to reflect on my last two months. My constant thought continues to be how much I appreciate the medical team I have supporting me. A simple thing that I so appreciated, Dr. Schaefer, came from you at the close of my appointment the day before surgery. You squeezed my shoulders and said, “We’ll take good care of you!” What a reassurance one that I have truly felt. Your staff continues to be kind and caring, thorough & professional. Many around me commend me for my positive spirit. I know that part of that may be my nature. However, a larger part of that comes from the confidence I feel from just the short time I’ve been in your care. It gives me confidence to face the future.

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for being so kind, caring and compassionate towards my mother during her entire journey with breast cancer. She lost her battle August 3, 2013.
From the beginning of her journey at Abbott, she felt your passion and she trusted you would be dedicated to do your part to make her feel better.
She appreciated the fact that you always made yourself available to her when she needed you! Even five years later she was touched by your intensity and compassion. She truly believed you cared for her, as a person, not just as a patient.
You did so much more for her than just make her look and feel “whole” again. You listened to her, comforted her and helped her find pathways to reach positive avenues for her concerns.
You were her favorite doctor in her very difficult journey. When she felt no one would listen or that no one cared, she called your office and when she didn’t feel calling you was appropriate, she would tell me she wished the doctor she was working with was more like Dr. Schaefer!
She appreciated that she always felt like she was “heard” by you. She also appreciate your direct and honest answers.
I am very grateful that she had you in her journey! I appreciated all the positive things you gave her emotionally, cosmetically, professionally, and personally. Thank you!

I just wanted to send a thank you for all the hard work you did. I know it would not be possible to have my finger right now if it wasn’t for you. I use it (well sorta) every day. I look back at the situation and know you took a big leap for me which I don’t think I can thank you enough. I know there were plenty of other doctor’s asked and couldn’t do it but you stepped up to the challenge and helped me. Thanks for all the work after the surgery as well and just being kind and worried every time I came in. For the tips on how to keep it warm and how to make sure I keep the finger forever.
